Preschool Is On My Mind Again

As Dylan’s third birthday approaches, I am thinking more and more about preschool. The current theme of my preschool – related thoughts has shifted from “which preschool” to “whether or not he will attend preschool”. We still have plenty of time to research and weigh our options, because if we decide that Dylan will attend preschool he would not start until January. There are still two preschools in our area that I plan to visit with Dylan, one is right in town and the other is about a half hour away. One is Montessori, and the other is Waldorf. Of … Continue reading

Preschool Primer Part 2 – What Kind Of Preschool Is Right For Your Toddler?

When you are trying to decide which preschool is the best fit for your toddler, keep in mind that not all preschools are created equal. There are multiple types of preschools, each with its own underlying philosophy. Here are a few examples of the different types of preschools that are out there. Montessori preschools have a philosophy that is centered around the interconnectedness of all living things and helping the child to discover his or her unique place in the world. Teachers are called “Guides” and they help each child to learn at his or her own pace. Life skills, … Continue reading

Choosing a Preschool

I’m in recovery from our preschool meeting this morning. I’m the president of our local cooperative preschool. We love our school. As I look around at options for public schooling next year, I realize that while there are a lot of possibilities, there are so many more in the preschool realm. What preschool should your child attend? Well, that depends in part what you’re looking for out of preschool. Are you looking for academics, languages, music and instruction in pre-reading and math skills? There are many academic preschools out there, some better than others. Observe a class and watch how … Continue reading

Montessori Celebrates 100 Years

This year, 2007, marks the one-hundredth birthday for the style of teaching created by Maria Montessori. When Maria first developed her ideas on how children should learn, she did not aspire to be an educator. She was a doctor. Maria Montessori first worked with children in an insane asylum. Later she worked with underprivileged children at a daycare. From her observations she created the Montessori methods of teaching. The Montessori method of teaching is based on the thought that children learn best if they are allowed to work at their own pace with room to move about and explore. There … Continue reading

Another Preschool Choice for Your Child

In my previous blogs, I have been discussing the different choices in preschool for your child. Yesterday I discussed choosing a Montessori preschool for your child. Montessori preschools can be an excellent choice for beginning learners in a preschool setting. Most official Montessori schools do cost more than a typical preschool, so that is something to keep in mind as well. Today, I am going to discuss yet another choice for you to keep in mind, a preschool that takes place in a church. We send our son to a Christian church preschool and have been more than pleased with … Continue reading

Is a Montessori Preschool Right For Your Child?

If you have read my blog from the other day about questions concerning preschool and your child, you would know that I ended the blog by stating I would write more about the different types of preschools out there. I am aware of three different types of preschools, one of them being a Montessori preschool. I will discuss this type in today’s blog and focus on the other two in separate blogs at a later date. Be looking for them! One choice people have for preschool and their child is a Montessori school. I have looked at these types of … Continue reading

Exploring Homeschool Methods

Finding a homeschool method that fits your family will focus your homeschool and improve the educational experience. I spent a few years exploring methods before deciding on the one that suited my family the best. Since that moment, my children and I have benefited in numerous ways. I encourage you to research the methods for yourself. A lack of vision and focus, as with any endeavor will result in failure and frustration. However, choosing a method should not be frustrating; it should be a natural fit into your family’s lifestyle. The method is simply framework for how your homeschool is … Continue reading

Why Not Let Teachers Design Schools?

How much does the learning environment affect the learning? Personally I feel that it affects it a lot. It just so happens that quite a few teachers in England agree with me also. Recently an online survey was given to teachers in England to examine their teaching environments. One third of the surveyed teachers revealed that the environment they were teaching in prevented them from doing their job efficiently. One of the complaints included narrow hallways, which lead to crowding, punching, and fighting. Others commented on inadequate desks, tables, and chairs. My favorite comment came from one teacher who stated, … Continue reading
